What is a WhatsApp template message?

A WhatsApp template message is a pre-approved format a business uses to start or restart a chat, with blanks for details such as what was ordered.

WhatsApp template message, explained

On the WhatsApp Business Platform, a business cannot send free text to someone who has not messaged it in the last 24 hours. It has to use a template: a message format submitted to Meta in advance, reviewed, and approved before it can be sent. Templates can include variables, written as {{1}} and {{2}}, which are filled in with details like the customer's name, an order number or an appointment time when the message goes out.

Meta sorts templates into three categories. Utility templates relate to something the customer already started, such as an order confirmation, a payment reminder or a delivery update. Authentication templates carry one-time passwords. Marketing templates cover everything else, including offers, product news and most sales follow-ups. The category affects how the message is priced and how strictly it is reviewed, and Meta can recategorise a template it thinks was filed under the wrong one.

A sales follow-up template for an Indian business might read: Hi {{1}}, this is {{2}} from Sharma Interiors. You asked about a modular kitchen last week. Would you like to book a free site visit? Reply YES and we will call you. Keep templates short, specific and honest, give an easy way to opt out of marketing messages, and expect rejections for vague or misleading wording. DigiPix Flow checks that templates are approved before they go out.
